The flight encountered turbulence about 40 miles northeast of Atlanta, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said. The plane landed safely in Atlanta just before 7 p.m., but turbulence injured several people and was met by emergency responders.
Delta confirmed that a passenger and crew member were injured, but did not comment on the severity of the injuries. The airline added that customs and border protection authorities allowed proper processing and clearance of the hospitalized patient.
Passengers share their harrowing experiences
Ayo Subah, a passenger on the flight, told CNN that the first 10 hours of the flight were normal until the plane encountered turbulence as it approached Atlanta. Mr. Suber said the plane suddenly fell.At that time I thought we were going to crash.” She also described how a woman sitting in the center aisle was thrown from her seat and hit her head on the overhead bin.
The flight attendant then advised passengers that first responders were awaiting the aircraft’s arrival. Footage shows some passengers having to be taken off on stretchers, while others appear to have neck braces.
NTSB begins investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has now begun an investigation into the incident. The investigation will examine a variety of factors, including flight data, weather conditions, and crew response.
