It’s not yet time for recruiting to the University of Alabama, but incoming freshmen are gearing up, taking part in the Bama Bound orientation program and showing off their expensive outfits on TikTok.
The program, held in June, gives prospective students a chance to get to know each other before classes begin and before they apply to join a sorority in the fall.
Though it’s a casual affair, young women are stepping up this year, ditching the cheap, oversized T-shirts and Nike Tempo shorts of previous years for luxe athleisure like Lululemon miniskirts and Alo crop tops.
On social media, users were shocked to see high school students spending hundreds of dollars on athleisure and thousands on jewelry, while Alabama graduates showed how their style has changed over the years.
TikTok Creators Casey Jane Dameowho enrolled at the University of Alabama in 2016 and is now based in Charleston, South Carolina, produced a video about the main differences in fashion.
Casey showed off his Alabama Bound outfit of the time, which included aviator sunglasses, a big scrunchie, an oversized T-shirt and white sneakers.
“That was cool back then. A long time ago,” the content creator promised of the oversized outfit.
Commenters were quick to agree that it was “the vibe of the time,” with one woman commenting, “No, but we were just there to make a living and didn’t care about wearing pretty clothes.”
another 2016 Bama Bound Participant Samantha Macke shared a video of her outfit on TikTok, captioning it, “Alabama Bound outfits are shocking. This is what we all wore in 2016,” along with a photo of herself wearing Nike sneakers, no-show socks, Nike Tempo shorts, an oversized t-shirt, and a baseball cap.
In the same video, Samantha also shared a photo of herself wearing an oversized tie-dyed tank top over a pair of black Nike Tempo shorts, which retail for about $30, black Chacos, and a sports bra.
“Seriously so glad to be in school in this day and age,” one commenter wrote.
One millennial wrote: “I’m old enough to know they’re just kids. I graduated high school in 2009 and before I was an adult I was wearing Sophie shorts and t-shirts or tank tops.”
Others complained about how expensive university uniforms now are, with one young woman saying: “Please, I’ve spent almost $600 on rush-bought uniforms so far and I only have two.”
The University of Alabama graduate’s video was a response from TikTok creators. Teagan Wheeling We show off this year’s outfits and analyze their pricey OOTDs (outfits of the day) and friends.

In Tegan’s video, the young women wore clothes from Lululemon, Alo and Nike, sneakers from Oncloud, as well as jewelry from Tiffany & Co., Kendra Scott, David Yurman and Goljana.
Some people watching the show at home are taking the opportunity to identify their favorite “characters” with sorority recruitment at the University of Alabama not happening until the fall.
May, a University of Alabama ’28 graduate, shared a video of herself wearing the Golden Goose sneakers, which cost about $600, along with eNewton jewelry, Tiffany & Co. jewelry and a necklace from 30A Street Boutique, a luxury resort popular with Southerners.
May also showed off her sold-out $150 LoveShackFancy and Kendra Scott bow earrings.
“I’m following you because I feel like you’re in a rush to be the main character,” one commenter wrote.
On X (formerly Twitter), people were horrified at the amount of money a young woman and her family was spending on what was meant to be a casual weekend away.
One person tweeted: “I’m so shocked that somehow this OOTD TikTok for Alabama ended up on my account. What does it mean to wear thousands of dollars worth of jewelry to orientation?”
Another agreed: “Right??? Just wait until the rush.”
Another wrote, “Bama Rush Tok has changed to include Bama Bound Tok and they are posting full-fitting Bama Bound outfits that cost hundreds of dollars.”
They continued, “Honestly, I’m glad I went to school there because it’s quickly becoming the school where rich girls flock every year for the chance to make headlines for being rich, and it’s very obvious in the sororities.”
“Greek fraternity life has always been a big draw, but with so many girls making headlines just for wearing super expensive clothes to join super expensive sororities, it’s becoming unbearable,” they quipped.
