The U.S. Department of Labor announced Thursday that new claims for unemployment insurance in Virginia increased last week compared to the week before.
According to the Labor Department, initial claims for unemployment insurance, a measure of layoffs, rose to 2,399 in the week ended June 8, from 1,998 the previous week.
U.S. jobless claims rose to 242,000 last week, up 13,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis from 229,000 the previous week.
Puerto Rico saw the largest weekly increase in claims, with claims increasing by 309.8%, while North Dakota saw the largest decrease in new claims, with claims falling by 58.1%.
