China hawks have the upper hand in the political battle over electric cars. They have to be careful not to overdo it.
The rules for tax credits for EV purchases in the US have recently changed. One difference helps drive sales. Credits worth up to $7,500 are now available at the point of sale instead of at the end of the tax year and can be used as part of your down payment. Other changes have the opposite effect. Battery parts made in China, the world’s largest supplier, are now ineligible for models amid new sourcing requirements designed to boost North American supply chains.
