Beauty is in the eye of the beholder – but who holds the mirror? The Kardashian-Jenner sisters, who often draw attention for their transformational changes, have expressed concerns about the beauty standards that now affect them.
Kylie Jenner on Hulu’s “Keeping Up with the Kardashians” last week Broken She broke down in tears while speaking about the public criticism of her appearance after last year’s Paris Fashion Week, and said it was a “miracle” that she still found beauty and confidence in herself.
The influencer said she went easy on makeup after receiving feedback from critics, but was apparently criticized for wearing too little makeup.
“That runs through our family,” her sister, Kendall Jenner, responded. “We’re dehumanized. They think we don’t have rules. … They think we don’t have feelings.”
TikTok user Marie Soledad spoke out online about the exchange, saying, “The only time the Kardashian-Jenners talk about how society’s beauty standards are weird is when they no longer measure up to their own.”
“I also hate the way people weaponize the language of social justice and talk of therapy to try to make the situation they find themselves in any easier,” Soledad said.
“Your empire is based on the dehumanization of women through societal standards of beauty. … I don’t think any of you have maintained your natural skin color in public for decades.”
Others on social media also questioned the moment.
While it’s sad to see someone being subjected to such public scrutiny, it’s important to recognize that Kylie Jenner and her family created the situation they find themselves in. Black people have long criticized the sisters’ aesthetic as being heavily influenced by black women, who have historically been mocked for features like full lips and curvaceous figures. When the Kardashian-Jenners began getting lip fillers, enhancing their curves, and darkening their skin with spray tans, they made these features more fashionable and widely accepted. charm and time Dig deeper into these ideas.
Now, Kylie Jenner is facing only a fraction of the criticism that black women have received for generations, shedding light on the double standards that persist in our society. The Kardashians helped establish new standards of beauty, but now they’re the targets of those same standards. Here’s how things have changed.
While bullying is never acceptable, this is a reminder that beauty standards can be either a burden or a privilege, depending on who sets them and who adheres to them.
It also proves that black women continue to set the trends and decide what is cool. They are the standard of beauty.
