Elon Musk’s social network X is bringing the ability to make audio and video calls directly from the app to its Android client.
One of the X engineers working on the project posted about the release of the feature and said that it will be available to Android users after an app update.
In August 2023, CEO Linda Yaccarino first talked about bringing video calling to the platform and eventually rolled it out to iOS users in October.
It is worth noting that any user can receive a call but only paid users can make a call. It’s one of a long list of things that only paid users can do on X. However, X removed the ability for premium users to set an NFT as their profile picture earlier in the month.
Users can enable or disable the connection through Settings > Privacy & Security > Direct Messages > Enable Voice and Video Calls. The list itself gives people the power to control who can contact them: people in their address book, people they follow, and verified users. They can select multiple options from these selections.
X is still very ambitious in becoming an “everything app.” Earlier this month, the company published its vision for 2024 including the launch of peer-to-peer payments, new xAI-powered features like “show dissimilar posts,” and more ad products for marketers.
Reports indicated that advertisers are Leave X and choose to spend money on platforms like LinkedIn after Musk told them to “go to hell” at an event in November 2023.
